The Firm
Why Fathom exists.
To fathom something is to understand it completely — to measure its depth and comprehend what lies beneath the surface. The name reflects how we prefer to work. Most consulting engagements produce a report; our aim is to leave an organisation with a working process and the understanding behind it.
Every engagement begins on the ground, with how the work is genuinely done rather than how it is supposed to be done. We ask the questions that are easy to leave unasked, document what has never been written down, and separate root causes from the symptoms they produce. The result is intended to be sustainable without a standing consultancy retainer.
The organisations we work with are rarely short of capability. What they are short of is someone to hold the detail while a capital project, a system implementation or a change to how a service runs proceeds against fixed funding, real governance and a business that has to keep operating throughout. That pattern is the same in manufacturing and engineering, construction, education, professional services and technology.

How We Are Set Up

Fathom Solutions was established to address a pattern that recurs across sectors: organisations commissioning advice that summarises a problem without materially changing it, and paying again when the same issue returns.
With backgrounds in manufacturing, technology and professional services, we have seen what follows when an operation is not properly understood before it is changed. Templates are imposed rather than adapted. Processes are designed around the auditor rather than the person doing the work. The adviser leaves, and the organisation quietly returns to how it was.
The firm is deliberately small and senior. The person you meet is the person who does the work, and we take on engagements at a pace that allows each to be given proper attention. Where a piece of work requires specialist input beyond our own, we will say so and help you source it rather than stretching to cover it.
