Approach
One method,
whichever way in.
Compliance work and delivery work look different from the outside. They fail the same way. A position nobody has tested, and a gap nobody owns. So we approach both the same way.
Why it is written down
The method is the argument.
A consultancy is usually chosen on who it has worked for. We would sooner be judged on how we work, so it is set out here in full: what happens first, what comes of each step, and what we will not do. If any of it does not fit the situation in front of us, we will say so before it starts rather than adapt the situation to the method.
The sequence
Four steps, in this order.
Each step carries a commitment you can hold us to. If we fail one of them on your engagement, say so.
-
Step 01
Understand
The operation as it actually runs, and the duties you actually carry.
We start on the ground, not with a framework. How the work is done, who does it, what has been worked around, and what the organisation is obliged to do by statute, standard, permit and contract. Most of what goes wrong later is decided at this point, by starting from a template instead of from the operation. The time costs more at the beginning and is repaid in work that is right first time instead of revisited after handover.
A picture of the work as it is, and one record of what applies to it.
-
Step 02
Establish the position
Where you genuinely stand, tested on the evidence.
We ask to see the record, not the intention. A duty somebody is confident about, with nothing to show for it, is recorded as unevidenced: uncomfortable, and the only honest position. Findings are graded by consequence, never by how easily they can be fixed. Grade by ease and a register empties from the bottom: the closure rate looks respectable and everything that could hurt somebody is still open. The position is reported plainly, and where the news is unwelcome you hear it from us first.
A position you can defend to a board, an auditor, an insurer or a regulator.
-
Step 03
Close the gap
A programme with an owner, not a report with recommendations.
Findings and objectives are scoped, costed, sequenced by risk and dependency, and given owners. This is the step most often skipped, and skipping it is why the same finding gets raised twice. An assessment nobody acts on is a written record that you knew: a documented liability, not an improvement. The work finishes when the finding is closed against evidence, not when the report lands.
The work actually done, and closed against evidence that will survive being tested.
-
Step 04
Keep it true
A record that does not go stale the week after we leave.
Checks, owners, frequencies and reporting are handed to your own people, with the information held in a structure that stays current as a by-product of the work, instead of being reassembled before each audit. We document what we build and train the people who will hold it. An engagement is complete when it runs without us, and a client who still needs us in two years is a failure of the work.
A way of working your team owns, and a position that stays current between audits.
The same method, two ways in
Whether the pressure is a duty or a deadline.
Assurance
Obligations established, position tested, findings closed out, evidence kept live. The four steps are the service.
The assurance work →Delivery
The same sequence pointed at a project or a programme: understand what is really being delivered, establish where it stands, close the gap on a plan that can be met, and hand back a way of running it.
The delivery work →What this rules out
The things we will not do.
- We do not certify. Certification is issued by accredited certification bodies after their own audit, and a firm that helps build the system cannot also certify it. We do the work either side of that.
- We do not impose a methodology. Recognised methods are used where they fit and adapted to the operation; templates imposed instead of adapted are among the commonest reasons this work fails.
- We do not produce a report and leave. If the finding is not closed, the engagement is not finished.
- We do not take work we are not right for. Where an engagement needs something we cannot do well, we say so early instead of stretching to cover it, and help you find who should.
- We do not soften the answer. You hear the unwelcome version first, and from us.
Start with the first step.
Most engagements begin with a conversation about how the work is currently done and what has to be evidenced. Tell us that much and we will tell you what we think it needs.
